As hydrogen is the most abundant element on Earth and can be easily transformed to hydrogen gas by eco-friendly means such as water electrolysis and then combined with generating systems using sustainable energies, such as photovoltaics, and wind power, it is viewed as one of the most promising future energy sources which could reduce our heavy dependence on fossil fuels and alleviate environmental problems like the greenhouse effect. In spite of this positive future outlook, several technical and economic barriers making it difficult to use as a primary energy source have yet to be solved. One of the biggest technical problems is how to develop safe and practical hydrogen storage systems which can be used for fuel cells, especially for on-board hydrogen storage systems
In an effort to pioneer in the field and contribute to promoting an eco-friendly hydrogen economy, Hanwha Chemical Corporation (HCC) has been concentrating on developing hydrogen storage materials. HCC has been working on new concepts in collaboration with the R&D teams of several local universities since 2006. On the basis of this pioneering research endeavor, HCC expects to extend its specialties to other infrastructure of the hydrogen economy, in areas such as hydrogen production, storage, and distribution.
